Having a parasite can be a scary thought, but you're not alone; parasites are far more common than you think. It’s a myth that parasites only exist in underdeveloped countries. In fact, the majority of the patients I see in my clinic have a parasite. As you will see, parasites can causing a myriad of symptoms, only a few of which are actually digestive in nature.
What is a parasite?
A parasite is any organism that lives and feeds off of another organism. When I refer to intestinal parasites, I’m referring to tiny organisms, usually worms, that feed off of your nutrition.
Some examples of parasites include roundworms, tapeworms, pinworms, whipworms, hookworms, and more. Because parasites come in so many different shapes and sizes, they can cause a very wide range of problems. Some consume your food, leaving you hungry after every meal and unable to gain weight. Others feed off of your red blood cells, causing anemia. Some lay eggs that can cause itching, irritability, and even insomnia. If you have tried countless approaches to heal your gut and relieve your symptoms without any success, a parasite could be the underlying cause for many of your unexplained and unresolved symptoms.
How do you get parasites?
There are a number of ways to contract a parasite. First, parasites can enter your body through contaminated food and water. Undercooked meat is a common place for parasites to hide, as well as contaminated water from underdeveloped countries, lakes, ponds, or creeks. However, meat is the not the only culprit. Unclean or contaminated fruits and vegetables can also harbor parasites. Some parasites can even enter the body by traveling through the bottom of your foot.
Once a person is infected with a parasite, it's very easy to pass it along. If you have a parasite and don't wash your hands after using the restroom, you can easily pass microscopic parasite eggs onto anything you touch — the door handle, the salt shaker, your phone, or anyone you touch. It's also very easy to contract a parasite when handling animals. Hand washing is a major opportunity to prevent parasite contamination and transmission. Traveling overseas is another way that foreign parasites can be introduced to your system. If you consumed any contaminated water during your travels, you may have acquired a parasite of some kind.

You never feel satisfied or full after your meals.
You've been diagnosed with iron-deficiency anemia.
The signs of a parasite can often appear unrelated and unexplained. As I mentioned previously, there are MANY different types of parasites that we are exposed to in our environments. I typically see parasites causing more constipation in patients than diarrhea, but some parasites are capable of changing the fluid balance in your gut and causing diarrhea. Trouble sleeping, skin irritations, mood changes, and muscle pain can all be caused by the toxins that parasites release into the bloodstream. These toxins often cause anxiety, which can manifest itself in different ways. For instance, waking up in the middle of the night or grinding your teeth in your sleep are signs that your body is experiencing anxiety while you rest. When these toxins interact with your neurotransmitters or blood cells, they can cause mood swings or skin irritation.
How to Test for Parasites
The best way to test for a parasite is to get a stool test. Most doctors will run a conventional stool test if they suspect a parasite, however these are not as accurate as the comprehensive stool tests that we use in functional medicine.
Conventional Ova and Parasite Stool Test
Conventional stool tests can identify parasites or parasite eggs in your stool, yet this test comes with many limitations. The problem with this test is that it is only conditionally successful. This test requires three separate stool samples that must be sent to the lab for a pathologist to view under a microscope. Parasites have a very unique life cycle that allows them to rotate between dormant and alive. In order to identify them in this conventional test, the stool sample must contain a live parasite, the parasite must remain alive as the sample ships to the lab, and the pathologist must be able to see the live parasite swimming across the slide. While these can certainly be useful tests for some people, they are unable to identify dormant parasites, and therefore I often see a high number of false negatives with this type of stool test.
Functional Medicine Comprehensive Stool Test
In my practice, I use a comprehensive stool test on all of my patients. The comprehensive test is much more sensitive than the conventional stool test because it uses Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology to amplify the DNA of the parasite if there is one. This means that the parasite can actually be dead or in its dormant phase and it will be detected on this test. Because this test utilizes PCR technology, it isn't reliant on a pathologist seeing a live parasite swimming on the slide. I frequently diagnose parasites in my patients that were missed on conventional stool tests.
How to Treat Parasites
The comprehensive stool test is able to identify 17 different parasites, so when I know which parasite my patient has, I use prescription medications that target specific species of parasites. If, however, the parasite cannot be identified, I usually use a blend of herbs, including magnesium caprylate, berberine, and extracts from tribulus, sweet wormwood, grapefruit , barberry, bearberry, and black walnut. You can typically find an herbal combination at a compounding pharmacy or though my website. In general, these herbal formulas provide a broad spectrum of activity against the most common pathogens present in the human GI tract, while sparing the beneficial gut bacteria. Before starting an anti-parasite herbal supplement, I recommend you consult your physician and have your liver enzymes checked if you have a history of liver disease, heavy alcohol use or previous history of elevated liver enzymes.

Think of adrenal fatigueas the "waiting room" for type-2 diabetes, hypothyroidism and heart attack. As a disease classification, it hangs out there with other "pre-" conditions like"pre-diabetes" and "pre-hypertension," and is a strong indicator of which direction a patient's health is headed; namely, down.
The exhaustion of the body's ability to react to the signals from the brain and pituitary gland inevitably contributes to disease states like type-2 diabetes, hypertension, and hypothyroidism. Because adrenal fatigue affects a cluster of body systems, treatment is incomplete if it just targets individual, dysfunctional pathways.
Adrenal fatigue patients can present with any of the following symptoms: constant tiredness, need for extra sleep, inability to cope with stress, reduced libido, low back pain in the area of the kidneys, sighing, yawning, recurrent infections, irritability, moodiness, and cravings for sweet foods.
It is important to differentiate adrenal fatigue from chronic fatigue syndrome, which is typically a post-viral fatigue syndrome characterized by disabling fatigue occurring chronically, after minimal exertion, and with duration of at least six months (Warrell DA, Cox TM, Firth JD, et. al. Oxford Textbook of Medicine. 2003: 860).
Saliva testing for cortisol levels and measurement of thyroid hormones in the blood are essential to establish the baseline diagnosis and to confirm the dysregulation within the endocrine system. But thorough treatment of a complex and sometimes tricky condition like adrenal fatigue involves more than simply boosting cortisol orother hormones. One needs to treat these patients with substances that simultaneously restore balance in multiple physiologic systems, in a multifaceted, complex way.
Why Herbs?
When a human body isn't functioning optimally, it is seldom the fault of a singledysfunctional pathway. More often, there are dysfunctional cascades occurring that criss-cross multiple pathways. Hormones exert their effects in large part as a result of their interaction with each other: For example, elevated estrogen will increase sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which will in turn, decrease thyroid hormone receptor activity.
Drugs typically regulate single, isolated pathways, and they can effectively manage one component or symptom, but may do little to improve the underlying multi-organ dysfunction. Herbs, however, contain multiple physiologically active compounds and bioactive metabolites that affect multiple pathways and physiological systems.
Herbal medicine is older than human civilization – animals as diverse as primates, deer, rhinoceros, and wolves deliberately consume plants to deal with bacteria, viruses, parasites, or worms (Engel.Veterinary Herbal Medicine.2007: 7-15).
Humans, too, have a long history of consuming plants to support health. Common herbs like Rhodiola, Korean Ginseng and Ashwaganda are excellent examples of plants that help the body maintain homeostasis, in part by managing cortisol. Traditional healers understood that nature has provided plants with complex biochemical systems for regulating their own physiology and increasing their odds of survival. When these biochemical components are then consumed by humans, they sometimes give the same effects and render the same benefits.
Assembling the Adrenal Puzzle
Adrenal exhaustion is complex, and requires a comprehensive, full-body diagnostic approach. You can use both phenotypic characteristics (weight, belly fat, hair loss), as well asreported symptoms (cold, irritability, fatigue, mild depression, chronic illness) to support diagnosis. Assessment of the patient's pattern of cortisol secretion can also be helpful.
Cortisol secretion is cyclic: rising in the morning and slowly falling in the evening. Salivary cortisol tests are a comprehensive, convenient, and cost-effective method for determining how much cortisol is circulating. This hormone enters the cells lining the salivary glands via passive diffusion. This process prevents proteins or protein-bound molecules from entering saliva, so cortisol measured in saliva is the active or "free" fraction.
In my opinion it is a reliable way to diagnose adrenal gland status. Based upon the results, I can usually make specific herbal and nutritional recommendations.
Herbal Options
Herbs for adrenal health are best used in combination, and these combinations need to be individualized and tailored to each patient's specific needs and contraindications. For simplicity's sake, there are two ways to think about herbal treatment for adrenal fatigue: Herbs can be used to modulate adrenal secretion (i.e., a "tonic" approach) or to increase the body's ability to respond to stress (an"adaptogenic" approach).
What follows is a brief review of some of the most common and clinically effective herbs used in the treatment of adrenal fatigue.
Licorice is truly a friend to the adrenal cortex. A staple of traditional medicine for adrenal insufficiency and ulcers, this herb contains triterpenoid saponins that influence cortisol-cortisone balance throughout the body. Glycyrrhizin is the main active compound in licorice. At higher amounts, however, it has a strong effect on the kidney and allows cortisol to interact with aldosterone receptors, which affects sodium/potassium balance and increases blood pressure. For this reason, patients taking higher amounts of licorice need to be monitored closely.
More is not always better and the adrenal benefits of licorice root are achieved with doses in the range of 1.75 - 5.25 g per day. Using standardized extracts, this equates to approximately 25-75 mg per day. Licorice root in tablet form, twice per day, morning and evening, usually delivers the proper dose level. Good quality liquid extracts are also available, and should contain around 30mg/mL glycyrrhizin.

J. Edgar is a 2011 American biographical drama film directed by Clint Eastwood, written by Dustin Lance Black. The film focuses on the career of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover from the Palmer Raids onwards, including an examination of his private life as an alleged closeted homosexual
The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the title character, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Damon Herriman, Ed Westwick, and Jeffrey Donovan. J. Edgar opened the AFI Fest 2011 in Los Angeles on November 3, 2011, and had its limited release on November 9, followed by wide release on November 11.
The film opens with J. Edgar Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio) in his office during his later years. He asks that a writer (Ed Westwick) be let in, so that he may tell the story of the origin of the FBI for the sake of the public. Hoover explains that the story begins in 1919, when A. Mitchell Palmer was Attorney General and Hoover's boss at the Justice Department. Palmer suffers an assassination attempt, but is unharmed when the bomb explodes earlier than intended. Hoover recalls that the police handling of the crime scene was primitive, and that it was that night that he recognized the importance of criminal science. Later, Hoover visits his mother (Judi Dench), and tells her that Palmer has put him in charge of a new anti-radical division, and that he has already begun compiling a list of suspected radicals. He leaves to meet Helen Gandy (Naomi Watts), who has just started as a secretary at the Justice Department. Hoover takes Gandy to the Library of Congress, and shows her the card catalog system he devised. He muses about how easy it would be to solve crimes if every citizen were as easily identifiable as the books in the library. When Hoover attempts to kiss her, she recoils. Hoover gets down on his knees and asks her to marry him, citing her organization and education, but his request is once again denied. However, Gandy agrees to become his personal secretary.
Despite his close monitoring of suspected foreign radicals, Hoover finds that the Department of Labor refuses to deport anyone without clear evidence of a crime; however, Anthony Caminetti the commissioner general of immigration dislikes the prominent anarchist Emma Goldman. Hoover arranges to discredit her marriage and make her eligible for deportation, setting a precedent of deportation for radical conspiracy. After several Justice Department raids of suspected radical groups, many leading to deportation, Palmer loses his job as Attorney General. Under a subsequent Attorney General, Harlan F. Stone, Hoover is made director of the Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation. He is introduced to Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer), a recently graduated lawyer, and takes his business card. Later, while reviewing job applications with Helen Gandy, Hoover asks if Tolson had applied. Gandy says he had, and Hoover interviews and hires Tolson.
The Bureau pursues a string of gangster and bank robbery crimes across the Midwest, including the high profile John Dillinger, with general success. When the Lindbergh kidnapping captures national attention, President Hoover asks the Bureau to investigate. Hoover employs several novel techniques, including the monitoring of registration numbers on ransom bills, and expert analysis of the kidnapper's handwriting. The birth of the FBI Crime Lab is seen as a product of Hoover's determination to analyze the homemade wooden ladder left at the crime scene. When the monitored bills begin showing up in New York City, the investigators find a filling station attendant who wrote down the license plate number of the man who gave him the bill. This leads to the arrest, and eventual conviction, of Bruno Hauptmann for the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh child.
After going to a Shirley Temple movie with Hoover's mother, Hoover and Tolson decide to go out to a club. When Ginger Rogers asks Hoover if he ever wishes he had someone to keep him warm at night, he responds that he has dedicated his life to the bureau. Ginger's mother asks Hoover to dance and he becomes agitated, saying that he and Tolson must leave, as they have a lot of work to do in the morning. When he gets home he shares his dislike of dancing with girls with his mother, and she tells him she would rather have a dead son than a "daffodil" for a son. She then insists on teaching him to dance, and they dance in her bedroom. Soon after, Hoover and Tolson go on a vacation to the horse races. That evening, Hoover tells Tolson that he cares deeply for him, and Tolson returns the feeling by stating that he loves Hoover. However, Hoover claims to be considering marriage to a young woman twenty years his junior, Dorothy Lamour, he has been seeing in New York City, provoking outrage from Tolson. Tolson accuses Hoover making a fool out of him and then begins throwing insults at Hoover, and consequently they begin throwing punches at each other and cause grave damage to the hotel room in the process; they eventually end up fighting on the floor. The fight ends when Tolson gets an upper hand over Hoover, and suddenly kisses him. Hoover demands that it must never happen again; Tolson says that it won't, and attempts to leave. Hoover apologizes and begs him to stay, but Tolson only says that if Hoover ever mentioned another woman again, their friendship would be over. He then leaves, with Hoover professing love for him moments after.
Years later, Hoover feels his strength begin to decline. He requires daily visits by a doctor, and Tolson suffers a stroke which leaves him in a severely weakened state. An attempt by Hoover to blackmail Martin Luther King, Jr. into declining his Nobel Peace Prize proves ineffective, and Martin Luther King, Jr. accepts the prize. Hoover eventually begins to consider his mortality and tells Helen Gandy to destroy his secret files if he were to die to prevent Nixon from possessing them. When Tolson appeals to Hoover to retire when Hoover comes to visit him, Hoover refuses, claiming that Richard Nixon is going to destroy the bureau he has created. Tolson then accuses Hoover of exaggerating his involvement in many of the bureau's actions. Upon Hoover's death, Helen Gandy is seen destroying stacks of files, assumed to be Hoover's rumored "personal and confidential" files as Nixon does a eulogy on television for Hoover.

What makes it organic?
Using the term “organic” (or bio in some countries) has been quite trendy of late. The whole “organic” business is booming and the demand has increased dramatically. Conscious consumers now prefer organic food or even clothes when shopping, but many consumers still do not know what the term “organic” stands for.

Other animal and cell studies have shown that it inhibits cytochrome P450, a group of enzymes that help turn cigarette smoke and pesticides into carcinogens in the body.
But the antioxidant benefits of pterostilbene are more far-reaching than that. An animal study conducted at Case Western Reserve University found that mice that were fed equal amounts of resveratrol or pterostilbene (equivalent to two glasses of red wine) had better cognition. But those receiving pterostilbene had lower markers of inflammation and cellular stress, benefits that weren’t seen by those given resveratrol.
One way to get pterostilbene is to eat blueberries, since they’re an excellent source of powerful antioxidant benefits. But you’d have to eat 10,000 pints of blueberries to receive the full antioxidant benefits. To get a protective dose, I recommend taking 50 mg of pterostilbene in supplement form.
Lowering blood lipids and cholesterol
Studies that used animals fed on blueberry based diets found significant reduction in blood lipid count and cholesterol count. While lipids and cholesterol stored in the cells do not pose much harm, elevated lipid and cholesterol levels in the blood have been linked to heart disease and stroke. In the mentioned study blueberries were found to be more effective than ciprofibrate, a cholesterol-lowering drug predominantly used outside the United States.[10] According to the study pterostilbene binds to PPARs, breaking down the cholesterol.[11]
Diabetes
Similar to what has been discovered with the drug metformin, pterostilbene has been shown to lower blood glucose levels in rats by as much as 56 percent, while simultaneously raising insulin and hemoglobin levels to near normal levels.[12] Pterocarpus marsupium, a tree that contains high levels of pterostilbene in its heartwood, has also showed an anti-diabetic effect in humans, with 67% of participants in a clinical study obtaining control of their blood sugar levels after 12 weeks and an average drop of 32 mg/dl in fasting blood glucose levels.[13]
Pterostilbene was shown to be a Nrf2 activator and its potential role in the therapeutic intervention in combating pancreatic β-cell damage thereby improving diabetes management.[14]
Cognitive decline reversal
In a study of 40 19-month-old rats fed either a normal diet or a diet containing blueberry, strawberry, or spinach extracts, the rats that were fed blueberry extracts had a significant reversal in motor-skill decline due to aging as well as other cognitive impairments. All of the diets above, except the normal one, resulted in some reversal or reduction of cognitive decline but none greater than the blueberry group.[15] A similar study with blueberries in a group of adults exhibiting age-related memory decline demonstrated a significant improvement in memory tests after just 12 weeks of drinking blueberry juice.[16] A study out of Tufts University on pterostilbene supplementation in elderly rats showed that pterostilbene conferred significant memory improvement as well.[17] The authors theorized that the memory improvement may be due to pterostilbene's unique ability as an anti-oxidant to cross the blood-brain barrier and co-localize in the hippocampus (the brain's memory center) where it may offer protection against free radical damage.
Anticancer effects in rats
In 2002, Rimando and University of Illinois at Chicago collaborators found in experiments using rat mammary glands that pterostilbene possessed potent anti-oxidant characteristics and possible cancer-fighting properties at concentrations similar to resveratrol.[18]
Additional work by Rimando and collaborators revealed a possible mechanism for pterostilbene's purported anti-cancer properties. Using mice cells, they demonstrated that pterostilbene, as well as other analogs of resveratrol, potently inhibits cytochrome P450.[19]
Human studies
The first human clinical trial on the effect of pterostilbene on cholesterol and blood pressure was completed at the University of Mississippi in April 2012.[20] The safety data from the double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study demonstrated that pterostilbene is safe in doses up to 250 mg/day.[21] Efficacy data from the clinical study was published on Sept. 12, 2012. A study showed that pterostilbene at high doses was associated with reduced blood pressure and minor weight loss.[2
